Browser games troubleshooting guide

A safe, step-by-step way to isolate loading, focus, mouse capture, storage, WebGL, and browser-setting problems.

Treat a browser-game problem as a short investigation. Change one condition, retry the same page, and record the result. That approach distinguishes a connection issue from a focus, extension, stored-data, or graphics problem without creating a long chain of untraceable changes.

Start with page and focus checks

Confirm the address is the project’s expected site, then reload once. Keep the tab in the foreground while the page initializes and close other demanding browser tabs during the check. If the page has a game area, click inside it before judging keyboard or mouse input: the browser can send input to a page control, another tab, or the address bar.

Some games request pointer lock so mouse movement stays with the game area. Read the browser prompt before accepting it. Escape usually returns the pointer to the browser; click the game again when you want to resume. Do not change several control or extension settings at the same time.

Compare a clean session

Open the same project in a private window or another current browser. This is a comparison step, not an instruction to disable security features. A changed result may point to an extension, cached file, profile setting, or stored site data; it does not prove which one without further testing.

If a privacy, script, keyboard-shortcut, or layout extension is involved, temporarily disable only that extension through the browser’s normal controls, retest, and restore it afterward. Keep the browser updated through its normal update channel. Do not bypass certificate warnings, download warnings, or organization controls to make a game run.

Check graphics capability carefully

For a blank canvas, incomplete graphics, or an immediate rendering error, check whether WebGL and hardware acceleration are available in browser settings. MDN describes WebGL as a browser API for rendering interactive 2D and 3D graphics. Follow the browser’s supported settings flow. On a work or school device, respect the organization’s policy and ask the administrator if an option is managed or unavailable.

Clear data only after protecting what matters

Stored website data may contain a game’s preferences or progress. Before clearing it, use any project-provided export option or write down what you need. Browser site-data controls can remove cookies, cache, and local storage; clearing them may permanently lose saves or preferences. Prefer clearing data for the specific project site, then reopen it and repeat the original check.

When asking a project for help, provide the page URL, browser and operating-system versions, exact error text, visible state, and the single change that affected the result. Do not include account credentials, payment details, or other secrets.

Use the games list to return to the project you chose. For project-specific setup, see Quake in a browser, Diablo in a browser, and Black Ops Zombies in a browser. Browser projects are distinct from the Windows-software context of our download guide.
